Do you like Soy?

Posted by julia on 08 May 2007 | Tagged as: Health, food

Soy and soy products have an extraordinary nutritional power, and more and more nutritionist are figuring this out and studying its health benefits. If you haven´t tasted soy, I think its about time you start learning a little more about it.

soy not only contains isovaflones that can be found only in plants and contain a high antioxidant power. what does this all mean?, well, it means that these little beans can help guard your skin against free radicals, which are the little critters that pollute or skin and make us age faster.

Aside from that, which to me is one of the most important assets of this little miracle bean, Soy also helps prevent heart disease, protects you from cancer, counteracts the effects of endometriosis, prevents prostate problems, helps with osteoporosis, controls menopause symptoms, and helps diabetes. What else do you want?

So, start adding soy to your everyday diet and you will start to see its benefits.

What is Acerola?

Well, if you haven´t heard about this fruit yet, it´s time you track it down and try it. It looks very much like cherries but they are a little softer and have a more citrus taste. They are native to South America, Central America and the Caribbean.

This fruit is different from the rest because it is said to contain more than 65% more vitamin C than an orange. It also contains vitamins B1, B2, niacin, and potassium among other nutrients. How can such a little thing be so potent? In many parts of the world acerolas are used as anti inflammatory, astringents, fungecide and much, much more.

Ask your local grocer where you can get some and start to enjoy the benefits today.

Walnuts have antioxidants that can help prevent diseases

Posted by julia on 25 Abr 2007 | Tagged as: Beauty, food

healtynuts.jpg

I love nuts! Really, I could probably survive only eating nuts specially walnuts. So when I found out that they are actually good for you because they contain antioxidants, which can help prevent disease such as heart disease, I was thrilled. Finally, something I love to eat is good for me.

One of the other awesome benefits of these nuts is that they help the appearance of your skin. With my dry mature skin, I need all the help I could help, and I need to do whatever I can to look my best, so if I could take care of myself while eating something that I love and is good for me why not!

Only one warning, these walnuts I love so much are very high in calories so you need to limit the amount you eat daily as to not have other problems such as weight gain.. See ,I knew there would be a catch.

New drinkable cosmetic from Borba

Posted by julia on 10 Abr 2007 | Tagged as: Beauty, food

Guess what? There is no need to apply hydrating or anti wrinkle cream any more, all you need to do is drink your creams, with this I mean, in specially packaged bottles of liquid that will make you beautiful from the inside.. The cosmetics firm Borba offers you this solution. Very curios don’t you think? I thought the same, so I investigated these products a little more and wanted to know what were the magical ingredients that were going to make my wrinkles go away. I picked the drink called “age-defying” and took a look at its ingredients which are:

WATER, NATURAL FLAVORS, DL-ALPHA TOCOPHEROL ACETATE, MAGNESIUM GLUCONATE, CITRIC ACID,GREEN TEA EXTRACT, POTASSIUM PHOSPHATE DIBASIC, ASCORBIC ACID, GRAPE SEED EXTRACT, SUCRALOSE, SILICON DIOXIDE, NIACINAMIDE, CHAMOMILE EXTRACT, ACAI EXTRACT, CALCIUM PANTOTHENATE, ZINC PICOLINATE, VITAMIN A PALMITATE, PYRIDOXINE HYDRLCHLORIDE, RED LAKE 40, CALCIUM SULFATE DIHYDRATE, FD&C BLUE #1, VITAMIN B-12, SELENIUM AA COMPLEX, VITAMIN K-1.

Wouldn’t´ it be better to just have a salad with some juice and call it a day? I mean to pay $30 for 12 bottles of chemically enhanced water is not the best solution for wrinkles.. but I´ll let you decide.

Do you eat everything that is on your plate?

Posted by julia on 05 Abr 2007 | Tagged as: food

huge-food-portions.gif

My husband just got back from a trip to the United States and he was amazed by the amount of food that was given when you eat out in any restaurant. No one could possibly eat everything on their plate or could they? Some of us have been told from a very early age, “eat everything on your plate or no dessert”, well I’m not sure if that is the best advise to give to anyone specially when eating out in the states.

Living in Europe I’m used to smaller portions which even if you eat everything on your plate, you are more than likely not going to get far (well, depending what you are eating). I wonder why restaurants in the U.S find the need to over stuff their clients? Don’t they see they are making their citizens unhealthy?

Tea that decorates your life

Posted by julia on 29 Mar 2007 | Tagged as: Health, food

We are all convinced by now that red and green tea are good for our health. These teas help maintain our bodies healthy, they help keep up is shape and have antitoxin properties that add to our antiaging fight.

Now there is a new (well, new for us) tea method that is not only original but also decorative. It is a simple process that starts with a flower bud that contains different types of tea, that once introduced to hot water it slowly starts to open up to a beautiful flower. Once the flower has bloomed, you are ready to enjoy your tea.

A great idea, I think I will invite all my friends to enjoy an original cup of tea while at the same time see nature at work. There are several companies that offer this type of tea such as Teagu, chinasecret or worldpantry.

Diet Coke Plus, the new soft drink with vitamins?

Posted by julia on 26 Mar 2007 | Tagged as: food

Next month Coca Cola will introduce to the market their new product called Diet Coke Plus which will be the first diet soft drink enhanced with vitamins and minerals. I ask myself why? Let´s see here, I think by now we all know that any type of soft drink diet or not, is just not great for our health, no matter how many vitamins and minerals you add to the mix.

I understand that Coke wants to compete in this latest health craze that has consumed the market lately but why not invent something actually healthy and not lie to consumers with products pretending to be good for them (just my opinion). The only thing I try to transmit through this blog is buyer beware, don´t let the marketing tricks of huge companies pull you in to their lies and drag you down the wrong health path.

Stevia and Xylitol alternatives to sugar

Posted by julia on 23 Mar 2007 | Tagged as: Health, food

Medical studies indicate that sugar may be a factor that ages the skin..NO.. don´t tell me that.. I love sugar.. well, there are alternatives out there that are said to be better for you and should be tried..

Stevia and Xylitol (sugar sounds much better) are herbs that taste a lot like sugar but don´t harm you as much. Stevia can be found in diet drinks and does not increase your sugar levels as honey might. Xylitol is very similar to sugar in sight and specially taste, and is also great for teeth, it is found as an ingredient in many toothpastes.

These variants of sugar are a little more expensive but they are worth it if they are able to keep us healthy longer. For baking, sugar is still the best alternative just remember my favorite words.. moderation..

Do you think McDonalds and Burger Kings should be banned?

Posted by julia on 16 Mar 2007 | Tagged as: Health, food

Last night I was watching the documentary called “Super Size Me” by Morgan Spurlock who shows how in just one month of eating fast food three times a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner) gained more than 27 pounds and raised his cholesterol levels 40 percent. Making doctors warn him that if he continues eating that way he would not only destroy his liver but possibly his heart.

Last week prince Charles of England suggested that all McDonalds be banned in the UK. I´m not sure if that is that solution but it is true that fast food is making Americans fat and is slowly invading Europe. Kids learn to eat this type of food, that is cheap and fast and don´t realize the harm they are causing their bodies.

Each one of us in in charge of the foods we offer our kids and we need to set an example of what eating right is all about. If we want a longer healthier life we need to be conscious of where we eat and not abuse our bodies with foods that could ultimately kill us.
